Key Largo Sailfishing report February 2010

2/22/10

The Sailfishing off of key largo has been excellent and I would consider it to be one of the best seasons we've had and were just reaching the peak of the season. March and April are the two best months of fishing in the Keys. We have been averaging three to six sailfish releases a day and getting about ten bites on some days. Mario Behr and his friends released 6 out of the 10 fish that they hooked off of Key Largo last week. The fish were eating live google-eyes fishing them from kites. The spring time brings the east winds and the migrating fish will actually ride the waves sort of like surfing. The tips of there tails will stick out of the water and if you are riding in the tower you can spot these fish. Two days ago on a trip we spotted five sailfish swimming down the waves and we were able to get our baits in front of them. We hooked a double header and landed and released both of them. Kite fishing for sailfish is the preferred method for them and it is common to catch a variety of fish while doing this such as Mahi, tuna, wahoo, and kingfish. During the spring it is common to catch all of these species during the same day. The Florida Keys during the spring is defitnetly the place to be if you want to fish offshore.
