Key Largo Fishing report March 2009
3/20/09

March has come around in full force in Key Largo and as expected the fishing is spectacular. Anything from Amberjacks to Dolphin to Swordfish are biting well. This is the time of year when the Amberjacks migrate to the Florida Keys to spawn, and there are plenty of them around the offshore wrecks and seamounts. The size of these jacks are averaging 40lbs. with some reaching into the 60 to 70lb. range. We like to drift over the wreck and drop two lines with live bait. It is almost guaranteed that when your bait drifts over the wreck it will get clobbered by a giant amberjack. We had an excellent day of Amberjack fishing last Sunday catching one weighing 82 lbs. The next jack we where reeling up had a followerer with it. A Hammerhead shark weighing app. 300lbs chased the jack right under the boat. You could have reached right out and touched the shark. It didnt take very long when the shark grabbed the amberjack and ate it in one bite.
When the wind has been blowing and the seas have been up the Dolphin fishing has been quite good. Kite fishing has been very effective for the Dolphin as well as Sailfish and Kingfish. There have been quite a few fish in the 20 to 30lb. range. We have also seen schoolie size fish and catching plenty of them. This is not considered the peak time for dolphin fishing but if you have the conditions this time of year can be just as good off of Key Largo. You dont really locate the dolphin uder the birds as you do in the summer. They just seem to pop up while you are live bait fishing. While you are Sailfishing with live baits from kites is when you can get ambushed from the Dolphin sometimes eating every bait in your spread.
There has been some good Swordfish action both in the daytime and at night. There has been some fish in the 400lb range caught off of Key Largo the last couple of weeks. Our trip last Tuesday was very productive. The first stop was a wreck off of Carysfort reef in 275 ft of water. We landed 6 big Amberjacks up to 65lbs. by 10:00 in the morning. With alot of time left in the day and not enough wind to kite fish we decided to head offshore and do some daydropping for Swordfish off of Key Largo. The first bait down got nailed just 2 minutes after hitting bottom. We pulled the hook on that one and the next one after that. The 3rd drop was the lucky one. We hooked one and it started to swim up to the surface. About 5 minutes later a 100lb. Swordfish cleared the` water just behind the boat. After a 15 minute battle the Swordfish was brought alongside to gaff. Plenty of steaks to feed every one on the boat.
