Deep Sea Fishing off Key Largo in July

7/20/08

Catching our limit of Dolphin has become almost an every trip occurence off Key Largo this month. A great group of people from Orlando fished two days with me on July 10 and 11. Rick, Kevin, Jack and his Son spent two days off Key Largo filling the fish box with plenty of Dolphin. They had some great weather both days. The first day we headed out around 8:00 a.m. towards the gulfstream which seemed to be about 12 miles from shore. The gulfstream is a current in the middle of the straits of Florida which travels to the north at approxitmatley 3 to 5 miles per hour. Just imagine a river in the middle of the ocean. Sometimes this gulfstream moves in a little closer to shore or out further. This is why every day the fishing may be a little different. The Dolphin(mahi-mahi) like to be in that gulfstream current where they can migrate faster and find plenty of food. Each day we try to find that current, which would probably provide the best Florida Keys fishing. Ricks crew seemed to have the best fishing between 12 to 15 miles from the shore. We quickly found some working birds in the area, and spotted big schools of mahi-mahi swimming among sargassum weed, which holds plenty of food for the dolphin. We were hooking three to five fish at a time, and again it didnt take long to caych our limit. The biggest fish that day weighed about 20 pounds, and Rick caught it with a 20 lb. test spinning outfit. The fish ate a live google-eye after I spotted it swimming along a weedline. We've got a few more days booked in July and I hope to have some more good reports from Key Largo.
